SPECIAL REPORT: The Munawar Anees interview
Nov 30, 06 5:00pm

He was back in Malaysia early this year - the first time since he left in 1999 on completing his sentence - for court hearings of his appeals.

Munawar A Anees Anees, 58, was detained under the Internal Security Act on Sept 14, 1998 - two weeks after Anwar was sacked from his deputy prime minister’s post by the then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He was tortured and forced by the police to make a false confession of “allowing himself to be sodomised” by Anwar and subsequently spent four months in prison.

Armed with the ‘confession’, the police arrested Anwar on Sept 20, 1998 and later charged him on several counts of corruption and sodomy.

The well-respected Islamic intellectual and author talks to Malaysiakini in this exclusive three-part interview.
